Raw Papaya Stir Fry

A fragrant, coconut rich raw papaya stir fry seasoned with cumin seeds and green chillies for a warm, comforting side dish.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 medium raw papaya 2 cups chopped cubes
  • 2 tbsp fresh grated coconut
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Few curry leaves optional
  • 2 chopped green chilies
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil or any other oil of your choice
  • Salt to taste

Method
 

  1. Peel the raw papaya, discard seeds if any and cut it into small cubes.
  2. In a bowl take salt water and soak papaya cubes in salt water for 10 minutes to remove any stickiness
  3. In a pan, heat coconut oil.
  4. Add cumin seeds and green chilies. Sauté for a few seconds.
  5. Add the papaya cubes and season with salt, red chili powder and turmeric.
  6. Mix well, cover and cook on low flame for 10 to 15 minutes.
  7. Check occasionally to prevent sticking. Add a little water only if needed.
  8. Once papaya is tender, add grated coconut and mix gently.
  9. Cook for 2 more minutes on low flame.
  10. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Cut papaya into evenly sized cubes so it cooks uniformly.
  • Cook on low flame to avoid burning and ensure softness.
  • Add a  2 tbsp of water only if the mixture begins to stick or papaya needs more cooking time
  • Adjust chilies and spices based on your heat preference.
  • Garnish with extra coconut or cilantro before serving.
